Students
The following activities and research tasks have been developed for you to complete either individually, in small groups or as a whole class. Some of the information required can be found on this website, other information may need to be researched and found yourself. On the bottom of each page there are additional websites that you may click on to read further information. Each activity has a marking criteria listed below it to assist you in understanding what you will be marked on.
Activity 1
Research the symbols and Rituals of Confirmation and Baptism. Are there any similarities between the two ceremonies?
In your response explain what the similarities are and the purpose of repeating the use of symbols or rituals (i.e. what the symbol means within these ceremonies).
Marking Criteria:
- Student correctly identified all of the symbols/rituals used in both baptism and confirmation.
- Student correctly defined what the symbols/rituals represent or mean.
- Student used correct grammar, spelling and punctuation during their writing.
Activity 2
Select one of the Symbols of Confirmation and create an artwork of this symbol using either:
- Modelling clay (No more than 15 cm tall and wide)
- Charcoal and paper (A3 page)
- Watercolours/Paint (A3 page)
Write a short explanation of your artwork including which symbol you are representing and how you have done so.
Marking Criteria:
- Student has created a visually appealing artwork which fits the size requirements
- Student has written an explanation of their artwork and its meaning
- Student has used correct grammar, spelling and punctuation during their writing.
Activity 3
Read the following scripture passages:
Marking Criteria:
- Student correctly identified the symbols/rituals within each passage.
- Student correctly identified if the symbol/ritual relates to Confirmation, Baptism or both.
Activity 4
In small groups, create a role play of a Confirmation or Baptism ceremony. You may wish to use props for this to represent particular items used. Remember you are recreating a sacramental ceremony, so you should be respectful at all times.
Marking Criteria:
- Students correctly sequence the Sacrament of Confirmation or Baptism ceremony.
- Students work together and communicate as a group.
- Students project their voices and are able to be heard clearly.
- Students use appropriate items as props, to assist in their representation of a sacrament.
Activity 5
Write down what the gifts of the Holy Spirit are. Do you or someone you know, demonstrate all or some of these gifts? Write down which gifts you or they demonstrate and how/why.
Marking Criteria:
- Student correctly identified all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
- Student related the gifts of the Holy Spirit to themselves or someone they know.
- Student used correct grammar, spelling and punctuation during their writing.
Activity 6 - Whole Class Activity
With your teachers and Bishop/Priests help, you will be preparing a liturgy celebration. The liturgy must include the use of appropriate word, symbol and ritual throughout it. The liturgy must use the symbols of oil and water, as you have now learnt the meaning behind the use of these symbolic items.
You may wish to include all or some of the following:
- Liturgical Dance
- Liturgical music/signing
Marking Criteria:
- Students worked together as a team and communicated effectively
- Students appropriately used and incorporated the symbols of oil and water within the liturgy.
